22LR Precision Benchrest
(Making every shot count)
(Making every shot count)
Shoots begin the 2nd Sunday of every month April through November @ 2:00. $15.00 per shooter
- Q: Why bench rest? No matter your age or physical capabilities you can compete.
- Q: If I want to bring my young son / daughter or wife, is that OK? Absolutely, although there is a lot of good humored fun we keep our shoots very family oriented and respectful.
- Q: What if I don't own a 22lr? No problem... we have you covered
- Q: I have a 22lr but its a cheap-o can I compete? Yes, just last year an individual with a 1956 Winchester leaver took 1st place.
- Q: OK, so I am hooked what's the best advice you can give me? That's a BIG question, 1st put most of your money into your scope, if you are trying to put 3 slugs through the same hole you need to see what you are doing. 2nd experiment with ammo to see which one your rifle likes but try to stick with subsonic (under 1100 fps) full lead 40 grain.
- Q: Why subsonic and 40 grain? To put it basically, going through the sound barrier and coming back to subsonic can make your bullet "wobble" and do strange things that affect the accuracy - remember you are trying to put 3 slugs into the same hole. As far as the 40 grain - the heavier the slug the less wind will affect the trajectory.
- Q: What should I expect when I come to a shoot? Returning shooters / members are very easy going, have a great sense of humor and will assist each other if/when needed. Don't think we are not competitive because we are but if you are new to precision shooting we will walk you through the whole shoot, answer any questions and give tips.
- Q: How long does it take to shoot? That really depends on the number of shooters but normally no more than 2 hours including buy in games
- Q: So how does all of this work? You would want to show up no less 15 min before a shoot to get checked in. If this is your 1st time we have people at the range 1 hour prior so they can assist you in anyway (show you around, help sight a scope etc.)
- At sign in you are given your targets (games included) and assigned a number
- Around 2:00 the 1st 5 shooters take the benches and fire 3 shots at each of the top 3 targets
- When all shooters have completed the top 3 targets we take a :30 break and return to the club house for refreshments (kitchen is open on all shoots - amazing food). Many insights can be gained during this time from long term members.
- We return to the range and shoot the lower 3 targets then turn in the targets to the range master who will calibrate the averages.
- While the range master is scoring we usually play 2 side games. One favorite is golf - a golf ball for each shooter is placed on a tee, on the back stop, at the 50 yard line and whoever drives (shoots) their ball the longest distance wins. Others are know your limits, poker and dice.
- When called, all shooters will report to the clubhouse and awards will be handed out for both the competition and games (targets can be inspected at this time)
- Q: Wow that sounds like something I would like but I won't know anyone and I don't even have a gun - Our members enjoy the sport and love nothing more than getting others interested. Don't worry about not having a gun and DON'T run out and buy one for the shoot. Come, ask questions and just have fun!
